Organic and inorganic acid emissions
What are organic and inorganic acids?
Organic acids are carbon-based compounds originating from living organisms (e.g. citric acid, acetic acid) and are generally weak and non-corrosive, whereas inorganic (mineral) acids originate from non-living mineral sources, typically contain no carbon, and are usually strong, highly corrosive, and readily soluble in water. The presence of organic acids (such as formic acid, acetic acid, acrylic acid, …) or inorganic acids (including hydrochloric acid, hydrogen fluoride, bromic acid, nitric acid, boric acid, …) may therefore require an appropriate abatement technique to prevent odour nuisance and/or to comply with local emission limits.
