Textile wastewater treatment

In textile production, water is essential for dyeing, washing, and finishing processes. These steps generate large volumes of wastewater containing high concentrations of dyes, surfactants, and organic micropollutants such as brominated flame retardants, nonylphenols, perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) and PAHs. Given the environmental impact, the BREF TXT (Textiles) document sets clear expectations regarding water consumption, chemical use and discharge quality, including targets like BAT-AEPLs for water usage per tonne of product.

Textile production line generating wastewater with dyes, surfactants and persistent micropollutants requiring advanced colour removal and compliance treatment.

Trevi’s approach to textile wastewater treatment

Every project begins with a detailed analysis of the effluent composition and production flows. Based on this, we design a treatment strategy that may include:

  • Separate collection and treatment of streams containing persistent micropollutants like flame retardants or insect repellents
  • Advanced colour removal via activated carbon or oxidation techniques
  • Biological treatment (aerobic or anaerobic) to break down surfactants and biodegradable organics
  • Tertiary polishing through membrane filtration or sand filtration to make reuse feasible

Beyond treatment, we advise clients on water reuse integration, chemical footprint reduction, and compliance with BREF BAT-AELs, helping them meet environmental goals while lowering operational costs.
