Two-stage chemical scrubber for Jeddah South pumping station
Ipec designed a 300,000 m³/h two-stage chemical scrubber to remove H₂S from the foul air of Jeddah South, one of the largest pumping stations in Saudi Arabia. The first stage removes about 95 to 98% of the H₂S, and the system treats peaks of up to 500 ppm with low chemical consumption.
Challenge
Jeddah South is one of the largest pumping stations in Saudi Arabia. Its two shafts are 32 m in diameter and 40 m deep. The foul air from these chambers contains high concentrations of H₂S.
Solution
Ipec designed a two-stage chemical scrubber of 300,000 m³/h in four trains of 75,000 m³/h. Each train has a stainless steel fan with flow control by variable frequency drive. The first stage runs on caustic, the second on caustic and bleach. pH, ORP and H₂S sensors control the chemical dosing. The dosing tanks stand in a cooled building, so the bleach does not decompose.
Result
The first stage removes about 95 to 98% of the H₂S. During peak periods, the system treats H₂S concentrations up to 500 ppm to odour-free air, with low chemical consumption.
