Activated carbon odour control for Sabah Al Ahmad Sea City
For a pump station at Sabah Al Ahmad Sea City in Kuwait, Ipec delivered an automated activated carbon odour control system. The unit was designed for 13,350 m³/h of foul air with elevated H₂S concentrations.
Challenge
Odour control units were required at the proposed pump station to prevent foul odour in the surrounding area. The system had to treat air with an inlet H₂S range of 100 ppm and peaks up to 250 ppm.
The local operating context also mattered. The installation was located in a desert area where peak summer temperatures can reach approximately 50–55°C, requiring attention to electrical and control equipment.
Solution
Ipec was selected to design, manufacture, supply and commission the odour control system. The system uses water-regenerable activated carbon and includes a complete identical working/standby configuration with dual fans, dual prefilters and dual carbon vessels.
Prefilters with automated cleaning are placed upstream of the fans to remove dirt and dust. The fans are installed in soundproof cabinets to reduce noise. The activated carbon vessel is a vertical dual-bed system designed for the required flow.
The unit is fully automated with PLC and HMI control. H₂S transmitters, pressure instruments and automated water supply and drain valves support automatic carbon regeneration. The local control panel includes air conditioning, and Modbus communication is available for connection to the main SCADA room.
Result
The system provides automated odour treatment for a pump station in a demanding desert environment. The duty-standby layout, automated regeneration and remote communication support reliable operation with limited routine operator intervention.
