At the Ain Khalid development in West Doha, IPEC delivered an odour control system for a sewage pumping station located in a sensitive area. The installation combines chemical scrubbing with activated carbon polishing to treat foul air from the pumping station.

Challenge

The pumping station collects sewage from housing within the Ain Khalid quarter. Because the station is located in the centre of a sensitive area, precautions were needed to prevent odour nuisance from normal operation.

The system also had to deal with variable sewage flows and fluctuating H₂S concentrations in the incoming air. During maintenance access to the wet well, the ventilation rate needed to be increased to improve the indoor climate for staff.

Solution

Ipec designed, fabricated and commissioned a dual-fan odour treatment system. One fan delivers the required flow while the other remains on standby, with automatic weekly fan changeover.

The first treatment step is a chemical scrubber operated with caustic and bleach. The system uses pH and ORP monitoring to control chemical dosing and reduce unnecessary consumption. A mist eliminator prevents droplets from passing to the next treatment step.

As a polishing step, a double-bed activated carbon system was installed. The water-regenerable activated carbon converts H₂S into sulphuric acid, which can be washed out in situ. The PLC also allows the scrubber to be bypassed automatically when inlet H₂S levels are low.

Result

The system enables controlled ventilation and odour treatment for a pumping station in a sensitive urban context. It also supports operational flexibility by increasing airflow during man-entry maintenance and by adjusting chemical dosing based on measured conditions.
