Biogas digester designed by Trevi and BiogasTec converting biomass into renewable methane and digestate for further treatment.

Biogas plants and anaerobic digestion

Together with BiogasTec, Trevi designs and builds installations for anaerobic digestion, commonly referred to as biogas plants. As the name suggests, these installations produce biogas, a renewable energy source derived from organic materials such as manure, organic waste, and energy crops.

What is biogas?

Biogas is not a new concept. The spontaneous fermentation of organic matter with gas formation is a natural process that has been known since ancient times.
A biogas installation creates the optimal, controlled conditions required to steer this natural process efficiently and reliably.

Anaerobic digestion takes place without oxygen and consists of four successive microbiological phases:

  • hydrolysis
  • acidogenesis (fermentation)
  • acetogenesis
  • methanogenesis

During these stages, complex organic material (biomass) is gradually converted into biogas.
Biogas mainly consists of methane (CH₄) and carbon dioxide (CO₂).

How anaerobic digestion works

While every project is different, the basic principle remains the same. A carefully selected mix of input streams is fed into a large, stirred digester tank that is maintained at a controlled temperature. The digestion process produces:

  • biogas
  • digestate

The biogas is used as fuel for the production of renewable electricity and heat.

The digestate is further processed into fertiliser for agricultural use and is suitable for additional treatment using proven manure processing technologies such as nitrification/denitrification and evaporation.

Our biogas project approach

Every biogas project is unique. This principle forms the basis for tailored conceptual design and accurate dimensioning. Based on the specific input streams (manure, crops, organic waste) and output requirements (fertilisers, electricity, heat), Trevi actively seeks technical and economic synergies to maximise project profitability.

BiogasTec is responsible for end-to-end project development, while sister company Trevion manages the commercialisation of the produced electricity.
