Compact container system with flexible scaling and remote control
Trevi supported Ethypharm in Châteauneuf-en-Thymerais with the design, installation and long-term monitoring of a biological wastewater treatment plant, ensuring regulatory compliance despite growing production volumes in the pharmaceutical sector.
Challenge
Ethypharm specialises in the production of galenic pharmaceuticals such as Omeprazole, Paracetamol, Propranolol and Ibuprofen. Initially, all wastewater was discharged to the municipal treatment plant. However, rising pollutant loads eventually exceeded discharge standards, prompting the need for partial on-site treatment. The client needed a fast, scalable and reliable solution to meet legal effluent limits without disrupting ongoing production activities.
Solution
Given the good biodegradability of the wastewater, Trevi proposed a biological treatment system. A containerised installation was deployed on-site for rapid implementation, consisting of a rotary screen, buffer tank and biological reactor. As production volumes increased, two additional biological reactors were installed to expand capacity. The original unit was repurposed as a sludge and effluent buffer, with the flexibility to be reactivated if needed. Since the wastewater lacks sufficient nutrients to support biological activity, urea and phosphoric acid are dosed automatically to ensure process stability.
Result
Ethypharm now operates a fully compliant and expandable wastewater treatment system. Since 2006, Trevi has provided both on-site and remote monitoring, enabling swift detection and correction of process deviations. The close collaboration between Ethypharm and Trevi ensures continuous optimisation of both production and treatment processes.
