Anaerobic and aerobic wastewater treatment for a bio-ethanol plant
Trevi delivered integrated anaerobic and aerobic wastewater treatment for a bio-ethanol producer in Belgium that processes wheat and sugar beets. The compact design combines an anaerobic buffer, internal carbon reuse and seasonal nitrogen control in one system.
The challenge: highly organic wastewater with seasonal nitrogen peaks
The bio-ethanol producer needed to treat highly organic wastewater with fluctuating volumes. Nitrogen peaks during the sugar beet campaign had to be managed, while biological stability was required across different wastewater sources. Multiple treatment steps had to fit into a single system that performs year-round under varying conditions.
Our solution: one compact anaerobic–aerobic treatment line
- • Anaerobic buffer ahead of the biological treatment
- • Integrated anaerobic and aerobic treatment in a compact design
- • Internal carbon reuse to support nitrogen removal
- • Seasonal nitrogen control matched to the sugar beet campaign
The result: consistent effluent quality across the seasons
The plant achieves high removal efficiency for chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrogen, phosphorus and solids. Internal carbon reuse reduces chemical consumption, and treatment is optimised for seasonal production cycles. Effluent quality is consistent for discharge or reuse, and the system is integrated into the bio-ethanol process.
