Biological air treatment
Biofilter
Biofiltration is a biological air treatment technique in which pollutants are degraded by microorganisms immobilised on an organic packing material. It is especially effective for odours, sulphur compounds and VOCs in large air flows with low inlet concentrations, provided that humidification, preconditioning and reactor sizing are properly controlled.
Bioscrubber
A bioscrubber is a biological air treatment technique that combines absorption and biodegradation to remove odours and volatile compounds from waste gases. It is particularly suited for compounds that dissolve well in water, such as alcohols, and can be a strong fit where biological wastewater treatment is already available on-site.
Biotrickling
In a biotrickling filter, volatile compounds are absorbed into the circulating liquid and biologically degraded on a wetted inert packing material. This makes the technique particularly suitable for sulphur compounds, chlorinated compounds and other pollutants for which biological treatment benefits from controlled recirculation and pH adjustment.
