Smart wet scrubber
The Smart Wet Scrubber is an advanced air pollution control system designed for the safe and efficient removal of ethylene oxide (EtO) from waste gas streams. By combining water‑based scrubbing with catalytic conversion, the system delivers very high performance without the use of strong acids.
High performance
Achieve 99.9999% EtO removal efficiency
Low OPEX
Reduce operational costs by up to 75%
Safety first
No need for hazardous acid storage and disposal
Why choose a Smart Wet Scrubber? for EtO/EO
Removal of waste gases with low to very high concentrations of EtO.
Removal of Waste gases with low to very high gas flows (>50,000 cfm).
EtO streams treated with Smart Wet Scrubbing
How does Trevi's Smart wet scrubber work?
Gas absorption and catalytic hydrolysis
Smart scrubbing transfers ethylene oxide from the gas phase to the water liquid phase. Once absorbed, EtO is hydrolysed into ethylene glycol on a solid catalyst. Water is used as scrubbing liquid instead of sulphuric acid.
Water-based operation and catalytic conversion
The use of water as scrubbing liquid eliminates the need for corrosive acids while maintaining stable and reliable operation. The catalytic process allows continuous conversion of EtO under controlled conditions, ensuring consistent performance across a wide range of gas concentrations and flow rates.
Key benefits for EtO/EO abatement
Flexible and robust
- Operates at ambient temperature without fuel heating
- Can handle very high EtO concentrations
- Tolerates variable gas flows
- Low risk of instrumentation failure compared to combustion systems
Efficient and reliable
- No warm‑up time — immediate availability
- Automated liquid management in the liquid phase (< 1 hour changeover)
- < 4 hours per month operating labour
- Option to rework existing acid scrubbers to Trevi’s Smart Wet Scrubber
Safety
- No need for acid handling, storage or disposal
- IECEx hazardous area compliant
How we retrofitted a 3-stage acid EtO scrubber to Trevi's Smart scrubber technology
How do you improve EtO abatement safety without sacrificing performance? At a partner facility, Trevi answered that question by retrofitting an existing three-stage sulphuric acid scrubber, installed in 2018, into its Smart Wet Scrubber EtO technology (SwEtO). The result: no acid handling or storage, less corrosion, lower operational complexity and high EtO destruction efficiency.
